Plane Crash Over Hudson River

A helicopter and a small airplane collided in midair over the Hudson River just before noon Aug. 7, 2009 and at least one person is dead. The plane, a Piper PA-32, took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, and the helicopter was a Eurocopter AS 350 owned by Liberty Tours, a sightseeing and charter company, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

People who saw the crash and its aftermath described the two aircraft colliding not far from the Hoboken shoreline, and said the impact sheared off the plane’s wing.

The first Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic was held August 11, 1929. Now, Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic is one of the largest parades in the country is on the South Side of Chicago. August 8 2009, the Bud Billiken parade celebrates its 80th anniversary. Bud Billiken celebrates family and black pride as it winds its way down King Drive and empties into Washington Park. Longtime parade-goers share these memories.

On first Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic, the parade route ran from 31st and Michigan Boulevard to Washington Park. In the mid-30’s the city rerouted the parade to South Parkway because its Michigan route tied up traffic as it went east into Washington Park. Around 1947, it was rerouted back to Michigan due to street repairs on South Parkway. After the street repairs the Bud Billiken® Parade and Picnic returned to South Parkway and has remained there ever since. South Parkway, now named Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, runs through the African American neighborhood on the City’s Southside. Since the Bud Billiken® Parade and Picnic began, more than 70 million children and their families have made the second Saturday in August a day of community and celebration of African American togetherness and just plain fun.
